forensics jobs in canada
A career in forensic science in Canada?

I am graduating high-school this year, and I’ve always wanted a career as a forensic scientist.

My question is: What kind of education would be neccessary to get a job in this field? I am now considering entering either SFU or UBC for BSc in Biology, and after that get a Bachelor of Technology degree in Forensic Science from BCIT. Would this be helpful? Or should I consider continuing my university education onto MSc or even PhD?

Also, to work as a forensic specialist, is RCMP my only choice of employer? Because as far as I know, it is not easy to apply for a position in a RCMP crime lab. If I fail to work in the RCMP, where can I get a job that’s within the degree that I obtained?

Thanks in advance.

In BC I would expect both Vancouver and Victoria to have large enough police departments to have their own forensic labs. Otherwise, Ontario and Toronto also have labs. If you are fully bilingual, then Quebec is another option.

As for the program, follow your first path and work on the graduate stuff after you get employed. While in school, learn as much other stuff that applies (human behaviour, kinesiology, sociopathic behaviour, chemistry, physics, etc) as you can. I think the CSI programs overblow the skills of the cast but I’m sure people that knowledgeable would advance rapidly in the field.

Good luck and remember to mix logic and intuition.
